Dale E. Spang, 92, of St. Joseph Terrace, Weedville, died Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Penn Highlands-DuBois, after a short illness. Born on May 19, 1925 in Ford City, PA, to the late Harry and Dora (Schreckengost) Spang, he was the youngest and last survivor of seventeen children.
Besides his parents and sixteen siblings, Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Olive (Youngmark) on April 5, 2014.
He is survived by his children, Michael Spang of Pittsburgh, Stephen “Beaver” (Kelly) Spang of Pittsburgh, Gail Shuman of Seattle, WA, and Patricia (Kenneth) Porter of Weedville; twelve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and step-children, Exper (Rose Mary) Fox of Weedville, Richard “Tim” (Theresa) Fox of Maryland, Gregory (Nona) Morgan Sr. of St. Marys, Wanda Cian of Caledonia, Christine Steele of Brookville and Linda (Alan) Geitner of St. Marys.
Dale served in the US Navy from 1943 – ’46, during WWII. He worked for seventeen years as a Crane Operator for PPG of Ford City and retired as a Riveter for Piper Aircraft.
He was a member of the Caledonia United Methodist Church, the Freemasons and the Bennetts Valley Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, word searches and gardening.
Dale lived the first era of his life in Ford City and has been a Bennetts Valley resident since 1964.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 25, 2018 from 2 – 4 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m. at the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home, Penfield, PA and on Monday, from 10 – 11 a.m. at the Caledonia United Methodist Church where funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Missy Smith.
Military honors will be accorded on Monday by the Bennetts Valley American Legion Post 978 burial detail.
